Effects of Acupuncture on the Plasma Levels of ¥â - Endorphin , ACTH and Cortisol in Chronic Low Back Pain

Abstract
Acupuncture, an important branch of oriental medicine, has been practiced for more than 2,000 years and has been proved to be an effective treatment for pain. However, the exact mechanism of acupuncture in pain relief was uncertain. Recently investigation for the mechanism of acupuncture have concentrated on the involvement of an endogenous opioid peptides mediated antinociceptive system that underlies the pain relieving effect. The present study was investigated to examine the effects of acupuncture to Gon-Ryun(Ku£þnlu¢¥n B60), Sin-Su(She¡¢nshu¢¥B23), Cha-Ryo(C¡¢ilia¢¥o B32) and Wi-Jung(We£Þizho¡¢ng B40) Bladder meridian points on the plasma levels of ¥â-endorphin, ACTH and cortisol and effect of treatment in the patients of chronic low back pain.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. In the resting period, the basal plasma level of ¥â-endorphin in chronic low back pain patients was significantly lower than the normal persons.
2. The plasma level of ¥â-endorphin was not changed after 30 min but was increased after 60 min by the acupuncture for 30 min in chronic low back pain patients. By the acupuncture for 30 min or venous samplings in normal persons, there were no changes for plasma levels of ¥â-endorphin.
3. There were no changes for plasma levels of ACTH and cortisol until 60 min after acupuncture for 30 min or venous sampling in both chronic low back pain patients and normal persons.
4. There was somewhat relationship between the changes of plasma ¥â-endorphin and effect of treatment in chronic low back pain patients.
5. There was found out showing prompt effection of treatment with being controlled vitality to be acupuncture meridian of points on which Leg Great Yang Bladder Meridian by Soon Kyoung acupuncture method(circulation of meridian acupuncture method) in acupuncture treatment of the chronic low back pain.
These results suggest that the acupuncture to Gon-Ryun(Ku£þnlu¢¥n B60), Sin-Su(She¡¢nshu£þB23), Cha-Ryo(Ci¡¢li¢¥ao B32) and Wi-Jung(We£Þizho£þng B40) bladder meridian points caused increase in plasma ¥â-endorphin level within 60 min after acupuncture and play an important role as a analgesic effect.
